Celebrate The New Year In Rocky Hill

Celebrate New Year's Day in a beautiful place that is sure to sweep you off your feet. Wadsworth Mansion, just a few miles from your home at Montage | Rocky Hill, invites you to join them for an unforgettable New Year's Day Open House event.

This stunning mansion is nestled in the rolling hills of Middletown, an escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the small city. The building was originally the summer residence of Colonel Clarence S. Wadsworth and his wife, Katharine Fearing Hubbard. Colonel Wadsworth was an early environmentalist and his knowledge of forestry and conservation played a role in the development of the "Long Hill" estate. The estate originally consisted of over 500 acres. Upon Wadsworth's death in 1941, some of the land was given to the state and became Wadsworth Falls State Park (another wonderful spot to visit!).

In 1947, ownership of the mansion changed hands--it was created as a retreat for those needing shelter, a place to meditate, or religious instruction. Two large wings were added to the main building and much of the land was sold (reducing the original 500 acres to the current 103 acres). In 1986, the property was sold again, this time to developers. The mansion was a negative asset and the land was not conducive to the small lot divisions the developers had in mind. Eventually, the property fell into the hands of the bank and the building and land began to decay from neglect and vandalism.

The city of Middletown purchased the property in 1994 and began a lengthy restoration process. $5.8 million dollars were spent to demolish fire-damaged portions of the building and restore the grounds to their original beauty. The configuration of the building is very close to Wadsworth's original home, preserving the beauty of the earlier times. The renovation was complete in 1999 and Wadsworth Mansion has become a beloved venue for weddings and special events.

The New Year's Day Open House takes place on January 1, 2017 from 1pm-4pm. Admission is free and guests can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, mansion history tours, refreshments, and a musical concert featuring the acoustic Americana group, Horizon Blue.
