Visit The Museum Of Natural and Other Curiosities

Are you looking for something to do near Montage | Rocky Hill during these cold winter months? Check out one of the oldest museums in the United States, just minutes from apartments in Rocky Hill. The Museum of Natural and Other Curiosities is cleverly hidden in the attic of the Old State House in nearby Hartford.

Of course, you'll want to wander through the neoclassical courtrooms and representatives' chambers at the Old State House. Constructed in 1796, the building's stunning architecture and beautiful paintings are definitely worth checking out. Don't miss the giant portrait of George Washington in the Senate chamber!

After getting a feel for the rich history of this building, make your way to the attic. Joseph Steward, a portrait painter for many political figures, opened one of the United States' first museums in this attic in 1797. He charged just 25 cents to enter, and the museum soon became so popular that he had to move to another building. Unfortunately, after Steward's death in 1822, his surviving relatives dispersed the collection.

Incredibly, in the 1990's a group of dedicated citizens re-collected many of the original exhibits by examining historical records from the museum. It's amazing to see all the fascinating "curiosities" this hard-working group found after so many years! Go and look for yourself on a chilly afternoon. You'll be astonished by the 18-foot Egyptian crocodile and there's even a two-headed calf specimen!

There's no better time than the present to visit this incredible building and surprising museum. After a 6-month closure, the Old State House re-opened to the public on November 30, 2016. Don't miss out on this amazing piece of American history. To learn more about living in the thriving city of Rocky Hill, CT, please contact us!
