Connecticut is home to an array of state forests and parks, some of which are an easy drive from Montage | Rocky Hill.
Visitors can enjoy fun, year-round activities, and places not to be missed include:
Wadsworth Falls State Park
Just seventeen minutes away, Wadsworth Falls State Park is home to 200-million-year-old rocks. In the summertime, taking a dip in the swimming pond and fishing in the Coginchaug River are popular activities, while the fall months draw many hikers and bikers to the park's varied trails. One of the scenic trail systems to explore connects the falls with the main swimming and picnic areas, and once visitors cross over the bridge, they pass through densely wooded areas and see Little Falls.
Meshomasic State Forest
Acquired in 1903, Meshomasic was the first state forest in Connecticut and the second in the United States. Today, it encompasses more than nine thousand acres, seventy-five of which are harvested all year to help increase the forest's biodiversity. Favorite activities include mountain biking, jogging, and hiking (there's even a club). Eight miles of gravel roads are open in the forest for summertime driving.
Cockaponset State Forest
Named after an Indian chief who is buried in the Ponset section of Haddam, Cockaponset is the second largest state forest in Connecticut. Visitors can explore more than sixteen thousand acres of scenic land that was developed for recreational activities, and things to do include horseback riding, swimming, fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.
